This is a self-guided wine tour to Kenwood wineries, hiking, shopping, activities, dining, lodging and the best of Kenwood usa. It suggests only the wineries and activities that we’d choose if there was only one day to visit Kenwood.
DINNER:
Kenwood Restaurant 9900 Sonoma Highway, Kenwood.
Phone 707-833-6326.
Hours 11:30-9:00m Weds-Sunday.
We love this place! It offers a good list of wines produced in Kenwood and Sonoma Valley, not to mention the California/nouvelle/country/French menu. Most of the vegetables, flowers, and herbs are grown in the owners’ garden. Since both the bar and restaurant are popular with locals, you’re likely see local winemakers dining at the next table.
Fresh Sonoma County ingredients are used in such dishes as roast Petaluma duck served with house-made ravioli filled with lamb, mushrooms and herbs covered with a red-wine reduction sauce. Starters are filling (try the baked polenta with goat cheese, tomatoes and herbs from the restaurant's garden), as are the entrées. They serve a great hamburger too! Their web site shows the changing menu www.kenwoodrestaurant.com

A Word About Lodging (We said this at the beginning but it bears repeating…)
The first thing you do before planning a trip is figure out where you want to stay. While we do tell you about a few hidden winery cottages (see below), we feel lodging is so dependent on specific needs (pool, hot tub, free wine) and budgets we wanted you to have a personal experience in choosing a place to stay. Call Wendy founder of Stay Sonoma at 1-866-647-8888 or she’s got a great web site if you askew personal contact at www.staysonoma.com. Wendy can get you the best rate and really knows her stuff.
Landmark Winery CottageThat said, in each section we like to give you a heads up about a special cottage find that’s not usually advertised to the public. In Kenwood, the secret place is in the vineyards of Landmark Winery. They offer an enchanting two bedroom cottage for rent, complete with fireplace, kitchen, fresh sweet rolls and juice. The cottage stands alone in the vineyard away from the winery for plenty of privacy and ambience. Go to their web site www.landmarkwine.com to see pictures and call 800-452-6365 for more details and to reserve. The cottage is $275 for one night or $225 for multiple nights. (Rate and availablity subject to change)

Ps-s-s-s-t want to meet a charming, good looking Aussie with a passion for grapes and wine? To visit the newest winery around and set up a
special tasting and tour with Chris Loxton, here’s what you do:
First call 707-935-7221 (that’s his cell number most days) and he’ll meet you at the winery if he’s not already there and give you a special tour, tasting, and walk through the vineyard.
The Loxton Cellars Winery is a big barn set amidst the England Crest vineyard which is located just off Highway 12 on Dunbar Road. Surrounded by the historic Pagani Ranch and the Wellington vineyard, both planted in the late 1880’s and 1890’s, this region has grown outstanding Zinfandel for more than a century. Syrah has been used in the 2002 Loxton Reserve Syrah (still in barrel) and grapes grown along the driveway (French clone) were used to produce the Gold medal and best of class Loxton Port in the 2003 Sonoma County Harvest Fair. To read more about the wines Chris makes go to
www.loxtonwines.com.
Be sure to taste: The Syrah from this vineyard has tended to be extremely dark in color, has great Syrah blackberry and gamey notes and a great tannic backbone. This one is age-worthy.
What’s so Special: Meeting this third generation grape grower and winemaker from Australia.. You can talk to the winemaker and grower at the same time. . . .enjoying the taste of these handcrafted special wines and at the same time walk through the vineyard with the grower.
