Wine.com
www.wine.com

Wine.com is a web site devoted to wine from all parts of the world.  Ranked as “the largest online wine retailer” they offer information on wine, tasting, serving, pairing, etc. but their business is wine sales and each web page offers various wine for sale, not matter what the subject.  That said, they have an extensive (32 wine basket items) and high quality offering that allows you to shop by price, region, or type of wine.  Of all the sites we viewed, only Wine.com approaches gift baskets from a true Wine Country view by offering baskets that sample the region, allow vertical or horizontal tasting, or Private Reserve wines.
Baskets are tastefully presented, combined with chocolates or sometimes interesting and useful serving trays.  The Spanish paella offering even comes with a paella pan.  This quality does not come cheap but the prices are a fair buy considering the quality they offer.

Fancifull
www.fancifulgiftbaskets.com

This is another site whose focus isn’t primarily wine, however it has a unique characteristic.  It allows you to choose the wines for your gift basket.  The baskets are presented with a price range for each one and you can choose the wines from a detailed list of options that include the type, vintage, year and price.  The founder travels around the world procuring the finest quality wines and the sites boasts some diffilcult to find wines.  The quality of the wines is outstanding and although the baskets are pricey, if you have a special someone you want to impress, this is the place to go.

Gourmet Gift Baskets.com
www.gourmetgiftbaskets.com/Wine-Gift-Baskets
This company who provides gift baskets across a broad range of items from holiday themed baskets and special occasions to chocolate and other gourmet food filled baskets.  However, they do have a specialty section for wine gift baskets that includes baskets with Ravenswood wines from Sonoma, Wild Horse from the Central Valley, and Silver Oak Cellars from Napa.  With the exception of Silver Oak, these are not considered great vineyards, but the Ravenswood can provide you with a wine country gift basket at an affordable price from a Sonoma winery which you will visit on your Sonoma Tour.  Prices range from a low $19.99 to $399.99 for a selection of Cakebread wines (Napa).

Gifts.com
www.gifts.com
This is an enormous gift site that allows you to choose gifts by type of recipient, personality, price, occasion, category, and price.  If you shop by price, categories are from under $50 to $200 plus.  In the higher price points, quality wines are offered including Cakebread, Rodney Strong, Francis Coppola, and Iron Horse.  The same brands can be found at wine.com and we suggest that you compare prices for the wine basket you prefer.

Gift Tree.com
www.gifttree.com
Gift Tree is another web site that offers an array of holiday, special occasion, and corporate gifts but they have an impressive selection of quality wines including Opus One ($424.95), Rodney Strong, Caymus, Robert Mondavi, and a selection of sparkling wines.  We like them for their combination baskets that focus on one wine region and the availability of wines gifts for as low as $24.95.  Baskets are tastefully packaged and prices are in line with normal retails.

Wine Country Gift Baskets.com
http://www.winecountrygiftbaskets.com/
This site was originally designed to offer wine gift baskets but now the focus seems to be on special occasion and holiday baskets containing a selection of gourmet foods, chocolate,  and even Starbucks coffees.  They do however have a category called “Wine Gifts for the Connoisseur” that offers wine baskets from some notable vineyards including Jordon, BV, Grgich Hills, Rodney Strong, Sterling, and Miner Vineyards.  Prices range from around $80 to as high as $250 for Beringer Private Reserve (a Glen Ellen Winery).

Wine Gift Club
www.winegiftclub.com
The home page of this web site pinpoints the difference in wine specialty gift sites and general gift basket sites.  They state that “you’re not getting a gift basket with wine in it, you’re getting exceptional wines, with a gift basket around it”.  Is it true?  Well, in the lower priced categories, they don’t state what winery but let you choose type of wine, usually one white one red.  Even in the higher priced categories of $149 and up, they state that since their inventories are constantly changing they are unable to specify wineries.  They do, however, offer the opportunity to build your own selection by calling one of their representatives and choosing from available stock.  We didn’t make the call so we can’t verify the claim that they have wines that are only available in tasting rooms.  It seemed that given the ability to update sites so easily, they’d be able to provide a list of stock online for you to make your choices.  In addition, the gift baskets seemed to contradict their claim by focusing on the foodstuffs provided rather than the wines.

Simply Classic Gourmet Gift Baskets
www.simplyclassicgiftbaskets.com
Once again this is a site that doesn’t specify wineries, only “California Wines”.  It seems that a basket for $125 that contains two California Chardonnays and a Merlot positioned around various foodstuff would specify label.  Since most of us have experienced Two Buck Chuck, a fine California Chardonnay or Merlot, we know that these fine goods run the gamut in price and quality.  I’m not sure I’d trust even my brother (bless his sweet soul) with my $125 until I knew where the wine was originating.  Although they did specify their champagne from Roederer and an organic wine, as a gift resource it didn’t seem simply classic to us.

Wine Legend
www.winelegend.com
If you’re looking for Kosher wines or are intested in wines from other countries, you may want to visit this site.  It seems that the focus is more on the foods and combinations than on the wine quality.  There’s also a note on all the pictures that says “Basket prices do not include wines in Photographs.”  Based on this we do not feel that we can recommend this site.
