If you can’t make it to the wine country, you can host a wine tasting party. Here’s how:
1. Decide what kind of tasting. Vertical means you’ll taste one type of wine from several wineries. Horizontal means your wine tasting party will taste different varietals starting from white to red or dry to sweet.
2. Decide how many people. Usually 10 to 12 is a good number since one bottle will serve about that many for tasting pouring 1 1/2 to 2 ounces.
3. Decide how many wines to taste. Five to six wines usually gives you enough to compare. Have enough glasses on hand and the right type. One per person is fine since you’ll dump whatever is left in glasses between tastings.
4. Have a dump bucket, french bread or crackers to cleanse the palate, water, pens, and tasting score sheets.
5. Do your homework and add information on region, wine notes, and if wines have won awards (reveal after tasting) If it’s a blind tasting then be sure to cover bottles. You can use foil or just paper bags to cover the bottles.
6. Decorate wine country or Tuscan style to get the mood.
7. Don’t forget to have fun.
8. Provide transportation or a designated driver to be sure your guests arrive home safely.
